The
66th AGM was held on Monday May 12th.
The principal speaker was Mr
Leo Boland, Chief Executive of Barnet
Council.
Leo Boland has been Chief Executive
of the London Borough of Barnet since
January 2001.
Since Leo joined Barnet, they have been
granted two Beacon Awards: for libraries
and for green spaces. Barnet has also
developed a wide-ranging investment
programme with 1642 new homes planned,
25 new schools, a total refurbishment
of its roads and pavements and investment
in IT and buildings to provide its customers
with easy access to services and its
staff the best modern accommodation
and tools for the job. However in the
recent national assessment of Councils'
performance, Barnet was rated only as
"Fair". Leo is determined
that this rating will quickly improve.
Prior to Barnet he was Assistant Chief
Executive at Newham and, for five months,
was seconded to work as Deputy Managing
Director at the London Borough of Hackney,
as part of the government team to turn
round the management of the authority.
He was a key figure in making Newham
'Council of the Year' in 1999 by transforming
service delivery and changing public
perception of the council.
Leo was born and brought up in County
Durham. He has lived and worked in London
for nearly 30 years. He has worked as
a Community worker in a law centre,
in housing at Islington Council and
in social services and strategic management
at Newham Council..
