Totteridge Ward Neighbourhood Watch

Totteridge Ward Neighbourhood Watch Update by Kitty Nabarro

Summary of meeting with Totteridge Safer Neighbourhood Team on 29th Nov 2006.

The Community Action Panel (CAP) meeting was attended by our Safer Neighbourhood Team members Sgt. Glenn O’Dea, PC Andy Caswell, PCSO Jon Goode and PCSO Paul Theodorou; and also by five Totteridge residents, by local councillor Richard Cornelius, by Totteridge Residents Association representative Caroline Stock and by me, the Totteridge Neighbourhood Watch Representative.

The Safer Neighbourhood Team mobile number is 07920 233746.  Their email is Totteridge.SNT@met.police.uk.   They work till 10pm.  Please only contact them with a query or to give them some information about the community. Do not contact them in an emergency.  In an emergency please ring 999.  These calls are now taken by a central office run by Met Call.  It is important to ask for a CAD number to ensure that the call has been logged and that there is a reference. (CAD= Computer Aided Dispatch message)

The SNT held a Drop in Open Day next to the Whetstone Police Station on Tuesday 12th September from 10am-8pm.  (This was advertised with posters and by email).  Although they did have 80 visits from members, it was disappointing that many more Totteridge Residents did not go to meet the new Police team who are responsible for our area.

The SNT teams are ward based and are seen walking in the area.  They talk to people and discover local issues. They go into troublesome schools to speak to youngsters and try and educate them to curb Anti Social Behaviour (ASB) and drugs. Since they started in April 2006 their main concerns have been:

  1. Queenswell Parking
  2. Swan Lane
  3. Riverside Walk
  4. Robbery
  5. Burglary
  6. ASB–Mainly in the Budd Close N12 area
  7. Road Traffic Safety

The PCSOs’ presence has already made a big difference in the area..  “Parking” refers especially to parents parking dangerously when collecting children from schools.

At the CAP meeting members mentioned their concerns and then voted to come up with the main priorities for Totteridge Ward before the next meeting in March 2007.

The priorities decided on were:

  • Schools—Anti-social behaviours by pupils and parents

  • Road Traffic Safety including speed enforcement particularly for Totteridge Lane, Longland Drive and Woodside Avenue

  • High Visibility Anti - Burglary Patrols using yellow jackets

The main messages that came out of the AGM in November at Colindale Police Training Centre were,

  • ‘Stay in control of your front door; do not let any one in, unless you know who they are, or you are expecting them’.

  • Beware of Distraction Burglary: for example when one person is talking to you, distracting you, while the other is burgling the house while you remain unaware.  It may sound a silly warning, but it is one of the most common ways of burglary
