TOTTERIDGE TENNIS CLUB
by Pat Taggart
It all started in 1947 when a group of local enthusiasts met in Dollisfield
Hut to discuss the possibility of starting a tennis club. They decided
to meet the Council to negotiate taking over three dilapidated courts and
a pavilion which had been used by the Home Guard and the Fire Service
during World War II. The courts and pavilion were located on the
present site of Totteridge Tennis Club at the end of Great Bushey Drive.
Now there are 9 hard courts, 3 of which have carpet surfaces.
Floodlights were installed on 2 courts in 1973 just before the "three-day"
week and could not be used for many months due to the restrictions in
the use of electricity. Now 6 of the courts are floodlit and well used
on fine evenings.
The Club holds many and varied enjoyable social events - quiz evenings,
wine evenings, barbecues, an annual dinner dance, a midsummer family day,
carol singing and always tennis tournaments on Bank Holidays for everyone
to join in.
At the moment there are 220 adult members and 90 juniors, together with
a social and honorary membership of 28. Six ladies' teams and eight
men's teams take part in the Middlesex League competitions during the
summer. In 2005 the men's first team won the Middlesex Premier Division
and the Club were very proud of the result.
The Juniors are given regular coaching by the Club coach, Clinton Coleman
Who, among other qualifications, was Captain of the England Over 35 team.
They are very keen as you would see, and hear, if you were to venture to
the Club on a Thursday evening. In addition to regular coaching Clinton
organizes sessions for them at half term and during the summer holidays.
He also organizes coaching for the adults at all levels which is much enjoyed.
The Club House has recently been re-designed with better changing rooms,
improved facilities for people with disabilities, more space, a re-furbished bar and kitchen and new furniture to provide a comfortable sitting area, all with the help of
lottery funding, loans and our own money.
The Club is now flourishing due to a lot of hard work put in by the
various committees and we look forward with keen anticipation to the
future.
The President, Michael Jack, who has been a Member since 1952, has kindly provided the background information for this article.
