Darlands Lake progress report

Many residents are quite rightly concerned about the future of the Darlands Nature Reserve.

An Advisory Committee appointed by the Council and under my Chairmanship has been driving this issue forward over the last two years and I hope this update informs residents of the progress we have made.

Work on the Darlands Lake repair plan is progressing. Detailed plans for the dam repairs were completed in the autumn. These gave details of the repairs required to the overflow channels and an increase in the height of the dam which will prevent over topping by the water, which has been a problem in the past during times of extreme rainfall.

Since receiving the plans we have been in negotiation with both the Environment Agency and the councils’ planning officers to ensure that they approve and support the project. Initial concerns expressed by the Environment Agency have been resolved following site meetings with their environmental officers and engineers. They have indicated that they are happy with the proposals subject to a number of minor amendments that have now been incorporated in the plans; we are waiting their formal approval. These plans have been submitted for planning approval and will be considered in the near future.

The Council is working on the tender documentation at present and when the formal approvals for the work are received documents will be sent to contractors to quote for the work. Council officers continue to regularly monitor the lake so any further deterioration to the dam will be noted at the earliest opportunity.
The Council has committed a considerable sum in the Capital budget to progress these works to the lake that are the Council’s responsibility. Once these works are completed the Darlands Committee will suggest to the Council future management arrangements for the reserve. The decision rests with the Council and all options are being explored except the sale of the freehold. I am not prepared, and the current Council Administration agrees with me, to sell the freehold of this (or frankly any other) greenbelt site.
